Netflix planning biggest ever price hike

TORONTO - Another price hike is on the way for Netflix Canada viewers.

The streaming video service is planning its biggest price increase yet for both new subscribers and its existing members. It says the move will partly help fund future programming investments.

Netflix's standard plan will now cost $3 more or $13.99 a month to watch content on two screens at a time.

The basic plan which does not offer high-definition video and only allows one stream rises a dollar to $9.99 a month.

LETHBRIDGE --  For the third straight year, Nikka Yuko’s immaculately manicured Japanese Gardens have been decked with thousands of lights to offer enchanted evening viewings.

The media was granted a sneak peak Friday night - we can confirm the beautiful display continues to dazzle visitors -- residents will want to visit more than once throughout the Christmas season and bring visitors.

Nikka Yuko began incorporating a 'season of light' observance into a Winter Lights Festival and creating a new attraction to draw-in visitors in 2016.

While the film was produced and directed by Frank Capra in 1946, it's actually based on a short story entitled "The Greatest Gift," written by Philip Van Doren Stern around 1939.

LETHBRIDGE – The first ever #YQL Expressions of Reconciliation contest was launched as part of Lethbridge’s annual Reconciliation Week back in September, and prizes for the winners were awarded on Friday, Dec. 14.

Participants were encouraged to submit creative expressions around reconciliation such as paintings, drawings, videos, songs, pottery, and photography. 

The contest was an initiative of the City of Lethbridge Reconciliation Advisory Committee (RLAC) in partnership with the United Way and the Lethbridge Indigenous Sharing Network (LISN).

LETHBRIDGE– École Agnes Davidson is one of this year’s winners in the CBC’s 2018 Canadian Music Class Challenge.

The school placed first in Category 2: Elementary Vocal for a presentation, which included a medley of Hallelujah, Mon Pays and Big Yellow Taxi.

Davidson earned top honours across the country in a category which included almost 400 entries.

Exhibition Park announced on Wednesday, Jan. 30, that the StagEX Music Festival will be coming to Whoop-Up Days, and the festival will mark a multi-year commitment by Exhibition Park to build a unique tourism property designed not only attract local guests but visitors from all over Western Canada.

LETHBRIDGE– With construction on the Cor Van Raay YMCA at the ATB Centre moving steadily along, the decommissioning plan for the downtown Stafford branch has been revealed.

Officials at the branch outlined their plans during an all-staff meeting of the administration of the YMCA on Wednesday, Jan. 31.

A branch closure date for the Stafford facility is still being determined, so when the opening date for the Cor Van Raay YMCA has been announced, then a closure date will be solidified.

Capital campaign looking to bring bronze monument recognizing veterans in Alberta to Exhibition Park

LETHBRIDGE– A new capital campaign was announced on Thursday, Feb. 7, by the Lethbridge United Services Institute to establish a bronze monument recognizing the contributions of veterans of Alberta while commemorating Lethbridge as an Artillery City.

The goal, based on funding, is to have a ¼ life-size monument measuring 12 feet long depicting a WW1 18-pounder field gun and carriage being drawn by six horses and their drivers going into action at the end of WW1.

LETHBRIDGE, AB - This summer the Lethbridge Public Library will celebrate 100 years in the community, but before that the Galt Museum & Archives has created an exhibit to honour the institution.

The library's "Connecting Community: 100 Years of the Lethbridge Public Library" exhibit is now on display, detailing how the LPL has been a cornerstone in the cultural life of the city.

Library CEO Terra Plato says a museum is about history, and what they're doing in partnership with the Galt is showcasing the history of the Lethbridge Public Library.

Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame project gets green light at the ATB Centre

LETHBRIDGE, AB– After years of planning, the great sporting legends from Lethbridge will finally have a home thanks to a new public art project being built at the ATB Centre.

Lethbridge City Council unanimously passed a resolution on Monday, Mar. 4, to approve the commissioning of an integrated public art project which will see the Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame permanently installed at ATB Centre.

Back in April of 2014, council was first made aware that the Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame wanted to be a part of the ATB Centre.

Extras needed for film starring Kevin Costner and Diane Lane

LETHBRIDGE - If you're an aspiring actor or are just interested in maybe taking part in a Hollywood film, you can try your luck this weekend.

According to the Town of Fort Macleod's website, extras are needed to work in a new Thriller starring Kevin Costner and Diane Lane that will be shot in southern Alberta. Costner will also be the executive producer of the film.

There are specific requirements, though, including no facial hair, facial piercings, tattoos, fake nails or coloured or highly stylized hair.

Local high school student heading overseas as part of winning Vimy Pilgrimage Award

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A high school student from Lethbridge is one of 20 winners of the prestigious national Vimy Pilgrimage Award heading out on an eight-day trip this week.

Out of hundreds of applicants from across the country, 17-year-old Declan Sander was selected to participate in the Vimy Foundation program, which recognizes the actions of young people aged 14-17 who demonstrate outstanding service, positive contributions, and leadership in their communities.

Sander says he was first made aware of the award by his social studies teacher at school.
