Lethbridge College hosting Global Game Jam on campus this weekend

LETHBRIDGE – Creative minds and technical skills are being put to the test this weekend as Global Game Jam has taken over the Lethbridge College campus.

Global Game Jam is the world’s largest game jam event, with competitors from nearly 100 countries all taking part in the challenge at the same time, from Jan. 26 to 28.

Participants have 48 hours to design a game from scratch, which organizers say creates a frenetic and energetic scene as designers bring their ideas to life.

Dance students at LCI get experience of a lifetime with world–renowned dance instructor

LETHBRIDGE - The Arts Academy dance program at Lethbridge Collegiate Institute has commissioned Allen Kaeja, from Kaeja d'Dance, to help choreograph a piece with students for their upcoming dance show in May.

Students in the program had a chance to learn from the world-renowned dance instructor on Friday, Feb. 1, thanks to program instructor Geordan Olson bringing Kaeja in.

Olson was a student of Kaeja's at Ryerson University in 2002 when Kaeja was an instructor and helped commission him to work with a youth company she had.

LOS ANGELES – David Ogden Stiers, a prolific actor best known for playing a surgeon on the “M*A*S*H” television series, has died. He was 75.

The actor's agent Mitchell Stubbs confirmed Saturday night in an email that Stiers died after battling bladder cancer.

No additional details were provided, but Stubbs' agency tweeted that Stiers died at his home in Newport, Oregon, on Saturday.

Lethbridge City Council gives the green light for $226,000 ATB public artwork projects

LETHBRIDGE – When Phase Two of the ATB Centre is completed, the public will be able to view two newly commissioned pieces of artwork.

The first piece, called “The Ball is in Your Court,” by Toronto artists Jennifer Marman and Daniel Borins, will be located in the gym and galleria at a cost of $126,000.

The other piece, called “Near and Far,” by controversial Calgary artist Derek Besant at a cost of $100,000, will be located in the aquatic centre.

Renowned jazz singer Holly Cole to headline Lethbridge Jazz and Blues Festival

LETHBRIDGE - Juno Award winner and Canadian jazz icon Holly Cole will headline this year's Lethbridge Jazz and Blues Festival June 16 at the Enmax Centre.

Event Vice-President Don Robb says Cole has been a well-known name for the last 30 years around th world, and has released numerous albums.

"She's a terrific singer. She creates her arrangements and the whole style thing which really works. I remember seeing her in concert many years ago and it was just awesome."

LETHBRIDGE - Southern Albertans have a chance on Saturday (Apr 14) to take in a multi-award winning Canadian play about a World War II veteran’s reluctant return to Normandy, France, for the 60th Anniversary of the D-Day landings.
 
The play, entitled "Jake's Gift" has been performed in the U-S, Enland and France. In its 11th year, it makes its way to Lethbridge.
 
Playwright and perforer, Julia Mackey, who has worked in theatre for about 25 years, spoke with LethbridgeNewsNow about the play's emotional journey.

Yates Theatre opening delayed once again

LETHBRIDGE -  A world wide shortage of lighting components, unanticipated structural issues and more asbestos remediation means that the Genevieve Yates Theatre in Lethbridge won't open until September.

It's the third time so far that construction delays have been cited in the $13.4 million renovation.

According to the city, the building contained an unexpected amount of asbestos, which required specialized remediation, while new structural issues were also identified recently when the roof and walls were opened.

NEW YORK - ABC has cancelled its hit reboot of ``Roseanne'' following star Roseanne Barr's racist tweet about former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett.

ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey says the comment ``is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel the show.''

The ``Roseanne'' revival this spring was an unexpected major hit for ABC. It was particularly popular among many conservative viewers because Barr's character expressed support for President Donald Trump.

LETHBRIDGE - "It was a year of celebration." Galt Museum and Archives CEO and Executive Director Susan Burrows-Johnson says 2017 marked several milestones for the museum and Fort Whoop-Up.

"We did lots of celebrating around the sesquicentennial [150 year anniversary] with the unveiling of the Galt statues. But we also... celebrated the Fort's 50th birthday, we had the First Nations of Japan come and visit the Blackfoot people at the Fort...we celebrated the twinning of St. Laurent."

Selected from nominations all over Canada, a release states each of the six finalists reflect the hardworking nature and pride found in small towns. 

The other five towns joining Taber on the list of finalists include Miramichi, New Brunswick; Portage la Prairie, Manitoba; Napanee, Ontario; Nicolet, Quebec; and Williams Lake, British Columbia.

LETHBRIDGE - The University of Lethbridge has received its largest ever gift of original artwork and cultural properties.

Valued at between $4 and $5 million, the 1,100 works were a gift from the estate of Calgary heiress Dr. Margaret (Marmie) Perkins Hess.

Many of the works haven't been seen in public since they were originally acquired, including a painting by Group of Seven artist Tom Thomson, called "Cliffs Near Petawawa." That work is valued at more than $1 million alone.

Helen Schuler looking to engage young artists with new Inspired by Nature exhibit

LETHBRIDGE - The Helen Schuler Nature Centre is inviting young artists to participate in the next community art gallery exhibition “Inspired by Nature.”

In a release, they invite anyone in Alberta under the age of 18 who expresses interest to submit work as part of the display sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lethbridge East.

Submissions must be inspired by nature and can be art like drawings, paintings, sketching’s, music, photography, videography, or creative writing.

LETHBRIDGE– The Helen Schuler Nature Centre will soon be hosting the Inspired by Nature — Youth Art Exhibition to celebrate the diverse creative talents of Alberta’s youth and their connection with nature.

The art exhibit will feature nature-inspired pieces in the community art gallery of the Helen Schuler Nature Centre, and it will be open to the public between Sept. 11 and Nov. 4.

The Nature Centre is encouraging Alberta residents 18 years of age or younger to head outside to explore and tap into nature’s muse.

TABER– The Town of Taber is preparing to host some of the biggest names in country music this fall.

On Sept. 15, Taber will play host to the national Coors Banquet One Horse Town event featuring Dallas Smith, Tim Hicks and Kira Isabella.

The town won the competition back in July, from a list of six places across the country that included Williams Lake, B.C.; Miramichi, New Brunswick; Napanee, Ontario; Nicolet, Quebec; and Portage La Prairie, Manitoba.

LETHBRIDGE– The northwest corner of 5th Street and 6th Avenue in downtown Lethbridge will look a little different come the summer of 2019 after City Council unanimously approved the request for the commissioning of the Round Street Gateway Public Art Project.

The artwork chosen, known as “Together” designed by Coryn Kempster and Julia Jamrozik of Brantford, Ontario, is intended to acknowledge the activities of the adjacent Multicultural Centre, which is also the home of the Southern Alberta Ethnic Association.
