Oscar-winner Martin Landau of TV's 'Mission: Impossible' dead at 89

LOS ANGELES — Martin Landau, the chameleon-like actor who gained fame as the crafty master of disguise in the 1960s TV show "Mission: Impossible," then capped a long and versatile career with an Oscar for his poignant portrayal of aging horror movie star Bela Lugosi in 1994's "Ed Wood," has died. He was 89.

Landau died Saturday of unexpected complications during a short stay at UCLA Medical Center, his publicist Dick Guttman said.

WINNIPEG - Canadian rock music legend Kenny Shields, the lead singer of Streetheart, has died, according to a Facebook post from one of his bandmates. 

Jeff Neill wrote Shields died early Friday, July 21, with his family by his side, at Winnipeg's St. Boniface General Hospital. He had undergone emergency surgery in early July to treat serious complications from a heart condition, according to an earlier posting by Neill.

LETHBRIDGE - If you're looking for some family-friendly events going on in the Lethbridge area today, the Gas King Stage at Exhibition Park is set for a free event beginning at 11 a.m.

The Dream Catchers, a group of 26 young actors from across the country who combine hip hop, spoken word and blend it with contemporary and Indigenous dance, will perform at 1:15 p.m.

There will be vendors, food trucks, a show and shine and photo ops with Lethbridge's historic 1912 restored Number 8 Streetcar as well. The event goes on until 3 o'clock this afternoon.

Yates Centre closes for renovations as the final curtain draws until May 2018

LETHBRIDGE - The last summer performances at the Genevieve Yates Memorial Centre are wrapping up as the doors get ready to close for several months for theatre upgrades.

The facility will no longer be accessible to the public as of this Tuesday, and isn't expected to reopen until May 2018.

Renovations have been ongoing for the past several months, but the site now requires a complete closure so construction work can be completed in the theatre spaces.

LETHBRIDGE - It's not an ordinary project for any ordinary science fair.
 
About a dozen students from Winston Churchill, Lethbridge Collegiate Institute and Chinook High Schools will be creating four environmentally friendly ink colours for the iGEM ( International Genetically Engineered Machine) competition in Boston in November.
 
The ink will be grown as different colours in E-coli bacteria for potential use in printing, textiles and paints.

Galt Museum to unveil Galts statue as final part of Canada 150 celebrations for 2017

LETHBRIDGE - The Galt Museum will celebrate the official unveiling of their new sculpture today.

Executive Director and CEO Susan Burrows-Johnson says the installation of the Galts statue is the last of their Canada 150 celebrations for 2017.

A release from the museum says the celebrations of Canada 150 have been diverse and inclusive at the Galt.

Lethbridge owes much of its early development to the Galts and their activities, as the city was started as an industrial community, developed around coal mines and transporting coal to the markets.

Vasa Lodge donates $179k for new Legacy Park outdoor theatre

LETHBRIDGE - The new Legacy Park in north Lethbridge will have an outdoor amphitheatre thanks in part to a donation of $179,107 from the local Vasa Lodge.
 
Chairperson Bob Hanson says they knew they wanted to make a donation to the park, but they also reached out to the Provincial Government's Community Enhancement Program for a matching grant.
 
"It's a performing arts open-type theatre that looks out over water. It can be used for performing arts or any kind of functions that are basically for an outdoor stage."

Merwan Saher says grant recipients have been breaking the rules by hiring people and buying services from out of province and he says one person claimed salary expenses on the set for three different jobs.

TORONTO - Gord Downie, the poetic lead singer of the Tragically Hip whose determined fight with brain cancer inspired a nation, has died. He was 53.

Downie died Tuesday night ``with his beloved children and family close by,'' the band said in a statement on its website Wednesday morning.

In the wake of his diagnosis with glioblastoma an incurable form of cancer the musician became a symbol of perseverance in the face of his mortality.

NEW YORK -- Robert Guillaume once said he saw his roles as a butler in two popular sitcoms were a way of "getting revenge" for those black actors who had similar roles -- but weren't allowed to speak their minds.

His performances as a butler in "Soap" and "Benson" were the type of workers who not only kept things in order -- but also kept their bosses in line.

Guillaume has died. He was 89 and his widow says he had suffered from prostate cancer.

LETHBRIDGE -  If there was one word to describe the world premiere of the University of Lethbridge's newly commissioned play, it would be 'unsettling.'
 
The play, called 'When There's Nothing Left to Burn,' was written over the course of two years, with input from Faculty of Arts Students, by Ottawa playwright and artistic director Sean Devine.
 
Devine's piece was chosen from more than 75 entries across the country for the U of L's 50th Anniversary.

NEW YORK — Comedian Louis C.K. says allegations of sexual misconduct made against him are true.

The comedian says he acknowledges that he had power over his victims and "wielded that power irresponsibly."

He says he is remorseful for his actions and "will now step back and take a long time to listen."

Earlier today, indie distributor The Orchard said it would not be releasing his new film "I Love You, Daddy."

The film was set for release on Nov. 17.

VANCOUVER -  The home is just 850 square feet and valued at only about $16,000, but the double sized lot where iconic Canadian Architect Arthur Erickson lived, is worth many millions of dollars.

In Vancouver, a city where lots with just a single home are becoming closer to unicorn-like status, the Arthur Erickson Foundation is trying desperately to hold on to its property, to preserve it and to restore it as a heritage site.

LETHBRIDGE - Ten years ago, Pride celebrations in Lethbridge consisted of a small barbeque in the river valley, and a dance that occured each month.
 
"These dances were advertised by word of mouth and in The Occasion, which is Lethbridge's queer newsletter," explains Pride Fest Treasurer, Derrick Antson. "You basically had to know someone who knows someone in order to get an invite."
 
Now, he says people are knocking on their doors asking how they can become part of the festivities.

Alberta Parks online system surpassed one million bookings this year

ALBERTA - The Alberta Parks reservation system recorded its one millionth booking, thanks to another record-setting year.

This year alone, Reserve.AlbertaParks.ca online reservation system processed almost 164,000 bookings for regular, group and comfort camping. That helped push the system’s nine-year total to more than one million reservations.

Provincial Minister of Environment and Parks, and Lethbridge West MLA Shannon Phillips says Albertans love their provincial parks and the opportunity to connect with nature.
